Of all the fun engagement sessions I've done, I can honestly say this one was the funnest. AND the most fun. Both of those things.

Katie and Dom met at the Pima County Fair on a blind date. Since the fair is not going on right now, we wanted to do something that would simulate that kind of fun atmosphere. We commandeered the arcade at Golf & Stuff here in Tucson and I had So. Much. Fun. shooting these guys playing shoot 'em up games, air hockey, ski ball, and all kinds of other stuff.

These guys were hilarious on the motorcycle game.

I needed some wind action. No fans around, so Dom helped out. Thanks Dom.

Yes, I know these next two are cheesy and they've been done a gazillion times. I don't care.

Stacy arrived at her wedding bleeding from her arm. I hope she doesn't mind me blogging this story, but I thought it showed what an awesome bride she was. At some point between the salon and the venue, she tripped over a rock and fell, scraping up her elbow. I went to photograph the girls as they arrived in their limo, but Stacy's bridesmaids quickly rushed her into the building like a bunch of triage nurses. I half-expected her to emerge from the restroom stressed out and upset. Instead I was surprised to see her smiling and relaxed. She totally shrugged it off and proceeded to grab a drink, sit in a chair and just chill as her bridesmaids buzzed around the room getting ready. Most brides would laugh at this situation only after a few weeks or months. Stacy was laughing it off immediately. Awesome.

Shooting Shannon and Gave's wedding was a blast from the past. I grew up with Shannon's brother Robert (and Shannon by association), but haven't seen either for at least 10 years. I happened to bump into Gave as he was shopping for wedding invitations. A completely random coincidence. It was great to see Robert, especially after learning he had served 3 tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Despite a lot of wind, Shannon and Gave's wedding was beautiful and a pleasure to photograph.

An added bonus was having Shannon K second shoot.

When I met Christina and Matt at a Starbucks to talk about their wedding, there was a woman sitting nearby, totally eavesdropping on our conversation. As in staring us down and listening to every word. Then she started asking questions. For all of my questions, she would have a followup question or comment. It was as if she was at the same table with us and needed to contribute. I thought this was pretty strange and felt the desire to either ignore her or move to another table. However, Christina and Matt politely answered all her questions and smiled and nodded at her comments (not without an eye roll or two in my direction I must add). I knew right away that I was dealing with a very sweet and patient couple, and that photographing them at their wedding would be a piece of cake. I was correct.

I love Christina's look in this shot. It expresses the feeling I think most brides (and grooms) have right at this moment.

I was absolutely honored to be asked to photograph such a small, intimate wedding in Oro Valley last weekend. The whole guest list was around 25 people. I love the laid back, relaxed feeling of small weddings. Here are some of my faves from the evening.

Hats! Boots! Belt buckles! Bolo ties! Country music! Horses! Gunfights! Okay, so no horses or gunfights. But you gotta love cowboy weddings. This one was a ton of fun to shoot due to the awesomeness of the bride and groom. Justine & Chase's love for each other is so apparent that some of my favorite photos of them together were completely candid. The "pictures between pictures" are some of the best when the couple can't take their eyes off each other and need no posing or direction. Capturing them just - being - is enough. I'm pretty sure they were completely unaware of me photographing them in these three:

If you're one of the 3 people that regularly follow this blog (Hi Mom!), you'll recognize this awesome family. We became friends after photographing their wedding in 2008 and ever since we've been bff's. This year we were asked to be Madilyn's godparents. I have never felt more honored and yet humbled in my entire life.

On one of the cold, rainy days following Thanksgiving, we went out and chased Madilyn around at the park. But not before grabbing some shots in front of the tree...

Seeing my little sister in a wedding dress was an unexplainable experience for me. The knowledge that she is now a married woman who lives in her own house... it's crazy. Many other big things are happening in my life right now, seemingly all at the same time. My little brother Andrew is leaving for Marine boot camp this month. My wife is having our first son around January 1st. My brother Ryan and his wife Jessica are having their second child soon after...

It may seem like normal life events, but as I photographed this beautiful bride, it seemed like life was being kicked into hyper speed and it caught me off guard. I'm so happy for Courtney and my new bro Clinton. They couldn't be more perfect for each other.

I had a blast wandering around downtown with Tiffany and Kellee the other day. They are ridiculously photogenic and made my job super easy.

Tiffany and Kellee met at a stoplight. They were driving down the road in different cars, as two complete strangers, and today they're engaged. I don't know how anyone could say that wasn't destiny or fate. They were meant to be together.

Ever since shooting Zara and Carl's engagement photos, I have been so excited for their wedding. I always try to keep in touch with the people that have entrusted me with capturing one of the most important days of their life. I like to check in and see how things are going - how the wedding planning is coming along, and share any great photo ideas. Well, Zara and Carl surprised me at one of our pre-wedding meetings with a gift for me and Kate - a frame for our first picture of our son:

I was amazed that clients who are paying US to photograph THEIR wedding (a huge honor in itself) would buy US a gift. It says a lot about the kind of people they are. So flippin awesome.

I was lucky enough to have Nickolas Duarte of Crown Chimp Productions as a second photographer. With his raw talent and my uncanny ability to repeatedly push buttons, we make a pretty good team and ended up with some great photographs. :)

Zara and Carl, I hope your friends are jealous of your wedding photos. These are some of my faves.

After their engagement session in June, I knew Heather and Lu's wedding would in some way be U of A - themed. :) Their wedding day was just a bit hot, but they and their bridal party were troopers and didn't complain a bit when I took them outside into the hot sun for photos. The dance floor was packed all night and we could tell everyone was having a blast.

Lately I've had the privilege of shooting some awesome friends and their growing families. I finally got to meet Bill and Cortney's son Bruin, which was long overdue. He is an awesome kid and absolutely hams it up for the camera.

This probably goes without saying, but these guys are HUGE U of A fans. In fact while we roamed the campus Luis filled me in on a lot of its history. It's crazy to imagine that Old Main itself was the University. That's it. Just one 2-story building.

Kate and I photographed Lauren and Ben's wedding at Saguaro Buttes in Tucson. It was one of the most fun weddings we have ever been to! Ben and Lauren were a blast and you could tell they were all about having fun at their wedding.

Kate and I were married at Saguaro Buttes in 2006. It was so cool to finally get to photograph a wedding where we got married. It definitely brought back some good memories.

Loved the irony in this pic - boutonniere in foreground... EXPLOSION in background. (Guys were playing Halo 3 and watching The Dark Knight while getting ready. How awesome is that?)

These are some of our favorite images from Rachael and Mario’s wedding. The ceremony at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Tucson was so awesome. It was the first Greek Orthodox ceremony I have photographed, and I felt so honored just to witness it. I say this about every couple I photograph, but Rachael and Mario’s love for each other is so obvious. Even at our pre-wedding meetings at Starbucks, they couldn’t help but hold hands across the table. So awesome.

We drove down to the U of A Campus for some photos at Old Main.

Then back out to Tubac Golf Resort for the reception.

Amanda & Sean's wedding was a ton of fun to photograph. They are an awesome, fun couple and seemingly very comfortable in front of the camera. The wedding was at Tucson Country Club and the ceremony was held in the mesquite grove. I love photographing outdoor ceremonies. I get to move around and get angles that I normally could not get in a church. I feel like I'm much less of a distraction outdoors, especially when machine-gunning frames and capturing sequences. If I do that indoors, I usually get a few looks from the guests. :) Sorry folks, but my clients' wedding photos are too important... now excuse me while I use your baby as a tripod.

The Real Reason

I hope I am not the only photographer who CONSTANTLY looks at others' work - the work of those that I admire - and simultaneously thinks two things: "I will do whatever it takes to get to that level" and "I will never get to that level because I'm a: not that talented, b: don't have the technical skills, c: don't have the means (financially or motivationally).

Looking at the incredible work of photographers that are a the top of the business has multiple effects on me. It is a driver of motivation and inspiration, and yet it is stressful, sometimes depressing, and can even sway my vision and my style into what I perceive as a "better" style. At this point in my budding photography career, I am starting to feel that looking for inspiration in the work of "the best" is actually more negative than positive. But I do want to develop my skills and vision into THE BEST it can possible be. And of course I am very impatient. I want that to happen NOW. This is of course all very confusing and at times frustrating, leading me to want to do one thing: GO SHOOT. Photograph... something. Someone. So I bring my camera to family get-togethers, where I know I will not be making any of my "best" images.

I took this photo of my brother and his daughter a few days before Halloween. We were sitting around a table carving pumpkins. It was just a mere snapshot, which I didn't think much of at all, even after burning some of the images on a disc for my brother and his wife. Then I got an email from Ryan saying that he loved this image, and that he could look at it all day. I am now more proud of this image than I am of any other image in my portfolio to date, for the simple reason that it had that kind of impact on my brother that I love and look up to so much, and who loves his daughter so much. So that is the point of this post - that the real reason I love photography (photographing people specifically) and the real reason could never put down the camera and give up because I'm never "as good as So & So" is because of photographs like this, that people love, and might keep forever, and could "look at all day", even years from now.

We did another portrait session with Alex and Sarah and their baby girl Madilyn. I'm so glad I met Alex and Sarah, but they way we met was so random. Sarah and I both used to work in the print departments at two different OfficeMax stores. One day I was working on a binding order, when the machine broke. I had to get the order done, so I called the other store hoping I could come over and use their machine. I talked to Sarah, and during our short conversation the topic of her engagement came up. Of course I jumped on the opportunity and asked if she had a photographer. Long story short, we shot their wedding in October 08 and have been friends ever since. Madilyn was born in September (do the math there! :) ) and we have had the privilege of photographing her several times - even as a bun in the oven!

She was a little unhappy to be placed in a pumpkin, but we got the shot! And no, she wasn't just plopped in there and left. I removed Alex's arm in photoshop. :)

Rainy Downtown Session

Rebekah and I planned on photos lit with the sunset in downtown Tucson. Well, instead we got darkness an hour early, and plenty of rain. :) We were stuck in the overhang of a building the whole time, waiting for the rain to stop. And of course, it never did!

After these first two natural light shots, the light was too dim to work with. So my challenge was to find unique angles and (make) good light in our very small shooting space. I think that given the circumstances, we got some great photos!

No matter how much I tell him how proud of him I am, I feel like it's not enough. Evan is completely self-taught. He spends many hours studying at night perfecting his skills. Staci & Will are an awesome couple. Staci is Kate's friend from way back. She was IN our wedding, and we were at theirs. They are a beautiful couple who will soon have a beautiful baby. Simple as that.

A while back, my sister in law Jessica's parents and grandparents requested that I re-create a photo that was taken of Jess as a baby, with her daughter Ella. We had to wait until Ella was about the same age, and of course could do the same "tricks". :) So we gave it a shot the other night, and I gotta say I'm pretty happy with the results! It was a fun exercise in re-creating lighting (and darkroom) techniques from, like, 25 years ago!

The camping trip didn't quite go as expected! Kate got very sick the night before and was in bed most of the day Friday. I ended up going up for a while to hang out, then headed down to be with my sick wife. Got these shots while I was up there. Hoping to go back up and camp soon!

First camping trip of the summer! We're leaving tomorrow morning, and will probably set up camp and then go hiking around. We were gonna go to the Chiricahua Mtns. but they have all these silly rules, like no pit fires, only 2 tents per campground, blablabla. Plus it's expensive. And the no campfire thing is just a camping killer for me. So we're goin up to Mt. Lemmon instead. Been there done that but it's still fun every time and you can't beat the cool temps up there. I may regret it (the thing's a beast) but I'm bringing my 70-200 lens hoping to catch some bird/eagle/hawk action and of course the 17-50 for the scenic vistas. Or who knows, maybe just some candids of my fellow happy campers. I'll post some pics after!

Wedding in Sonoita

Liz and Tony's wedding was held in Sonoita, AZ at the Walker Guest Ranch. This place is amazing. Kate and I kept talking about how fun it would be to stay there. There were dogs wandering around everywhere (including Liz & Tony's dog Nana). Liz & Tony's son Teddy is the cutest kid. It was such a fun, laid back, casual wedding and reception - which makes it so much fun to photograph. Thanks Liz, Tony & Teddy!

Poor lil Teddy was a bit bored at the ceremony. :)

My lil bro has become my go-to male model. He's always down for a quick shoot. He just got his first car - a Dodge Stratus (woot!).

It may seem unusual, but I look up to my little brother. Not only physically (he's a few inches taller than me) but because he's one of the coolest kids I know. He's a drummer who has flown an airplane and won the gold metal at the STATE competition in electrical wiring. And those are just a few of the cool things about him.

My ma and pa's black lab Riley is one of those crazy dogs that will literally play fetch ALL DAY. As soon as you go out back, he looks you in the eye and you know it's on. And he runs off to find one of his many decrepit tennis balls. So, the only way to get a good headshot of him is to hold the ball an inch away from your lens. :) If I didn't have cat-like reflexes, I'm sure he would currently be digesting my 50mm 1.4.
